Hook Grip Tape OEM Manufacturing: Custom Printing, Sizes and Packaging
A sourcing guide for Korean brands, gyms and distributors — what you can customise, which packaging formats the market actually uses, and how to place a first order

The hook grip is one of the few techniques in strength sport that cannot be trained around. The thumb is the load-bearing part, and it either holds or it does not. That is why hook grip tape has become a small but persistent product line for anyone selling into weightlifting, powerlifting and functional fitness — and why buyers keep looking for a manufacturer who can put their own brand on it.
This guide covers the specification, what can be customised, and the packaging formats standard across this market. If you are sourcing for Korea or elsewhere in Asia, the ordering checklist at the end is the part to keep.
What buyers actually order
Hook grip tape is not a separate technology. It is narrow athletic tape, cut and packed for a specific job: protecting the thumb joint and the skin of the thumb when it is locked over the index finger against a barbell.
Three things follow from that use case:
- It is narrow. A 1 inch / 2.5 cm width dominates, because the tape has to sit neatly around a single joint without bunching in the crease of the thumb.
- It has to stay put under friction and sweat, which is why an elastic adhesive construction is common in this category alongside cotton.
- It is bought in volume by gyms, not by athletes one roll at a time. A powerlifting or CrossFit box goes through it every training week.
That is what makes it interesting for a distributor or a brand: a consumable with a repeat rhythm, and because the roll is small and light, cheap to ship and easy to range.

The specification, in the language buyers use
Sizing stalls more sourcing conversations than anything else: the same roll is described differently in each market.
- Width. 25 mm is the standard for hook grip and thumb wrapping. Our full range runs from 5 mm to 75 mm; 25 mm is the size we produce most for this application, and 38 mm and 50 mm are also regularly stocked.
- Length. 10 m and 13.7 m cover both conventions — 13.7 m is the metric roll sold as 15 yards (15 yd = 13.716 m), which is the length US-facing and export-facing packaging usually prints, while 10 m suits metric markets.
- Substrate. Our cotton tape is manufactured on 100% high-GSM cotton — a dense weave that grips without slipping and resists tearing at the edge. Our thumb tape line is supplied as an elastic adhesive bandage (EAB), the construction most commonly used for hook grip in this market.
- Adhesive. Zinc oxide hot melt, coated at a weight that holds through sweat and movement and releases without leaving a sticky residue on the skin.
- Coating. Our standard construction uses our own breathable coating. A full-coat adhesive option is available where maximum tack matters more than airflow.
- Edge. Serrated, so a coach can tear it by hand, or straight for a cleaner line.
- Moisture. The tape is water-resistant, which is what you want for grip under sweat.
Send your specification in whichever units you use. We confirm the converted size in writing before production, so the roll you receive matches the one you quoted.
Customisation: what can be changed, and at what entry point
Almost every visual element of this product can carry your brand. The differences are in the entry quantities: each element has its own production setup.
Printing on the tape cloth. Your logo or a full-surface pattern, in single-colour, two-colour or multi-colour. This is the most visible branding option and the one that carries the highest setup, so the number of colours in your artwork drives the quotation more than anything else.
Printed paper cores. Printing on the inner core is the lowest-threshold branding option, and it is the one we recommend for a first order. The plate is charged once and then retained in our warehouse, so every reorder reuses it at no additional plate cost.
Colour. White, black and skin tone cover most of the market. Blue, yellow, red, pink, green, purple and army green are available as alternatives, and a coloured serrated edge is a lower-entry way to differentiate a roll without a full print programme.
Size. Width and length are cut to your specification, so you can match the exact format your market expects.

Entry quantities. Standard solid-colour tape starts at 288 rolls. Within the custom programme, a printed paper core and a coloured serrated edge both start from a small number of cartons, while a full printed run starts at 2,000 rolls for 2.5 cm × 10 m and 1,440 rolls for 2.5 cm × 13.7 m.
Packaging: the formats this market uses
A roll of tape is not a finished product until it is packed for the channel it sells through, and channels differ: a distributor wants bulk cartons, a gym wants multi-roll packs, an e-commerce seller wants a box that can be photographed.
Across this market, private label packaging has settled into a short, standard list of formats. Here it is, alongside what we produce.
| Market format | What it is | Our status |
| Individual roll film or bag | Single roll in a transparent bag, or film printed with an arrow line to show the unwind direction | Available |
| Multi-roll packs | Two rolls filmed together, or a mid-box packed at 12 or 24 rolls | Available |
| Printed paper cores | The inner tube printed with your logo | Available |
| Tape cloth printing | Your logo or any pattern printed on the tape itself | Available |
| Custom retail box | A box built to hold a specific roll count, with a printed insert card | Available |
| Polybag / printed OPP bag | Printed OPP bag or hot shrink film carrying your branding | Available |
| Display and inner boxes | Presentation packaging for retail shelves | Available |
| Bulk export cartons | Master cartons for distributor stock orders | Available |
| Product labels and barcode stickers | EAN / UPC labels applied per your channel’s requirement | Confirm on enquiry |
| Private label carton marks | Shipping marks printed on export cartons | Confirm on enquiry |
| Pallet packing | Palletised cartons for container shipments | Confirm on enquiry |
The format should follow the sales channel, not the other way around. Distributor stock orders usually need nothing more than individual wrapping and a bulk carton. A private label programme selling through retail or e-commerce needs labels, barcodes, an inner or display box, and branded export cartons. Getting that decision right before artwork is what keeps a launch on schedule.
Second, if you have seen a packaging format in this market, it is almost certainly drawn from the list above. If your channel needs something outside it, send the artwork and dimensions and we will confirm feasibility before quoting rather than guess at it.

What we will ask for before printing packaging
Packaging artwork has to carry commercial information, not just your logo. When you are preparing a private label programme, have these ready:
- Brand name or logo
- Product name and tape size
- Material and adhesive description
- SKU number
- EAN or UPC barcode, supplied as a usable barcode file rather than an image
- Country-of-origin wording
- Storage or safety information
- Packing quantity
- Importer or distributor details for the destination market
We will run an approval sequence before mass production: packaging layout, then label and barcode proof, then a box sample, then a roll count and arrangement check, and finally a carton confirmation. Colour-sensitive packaging should be approved from a physical proof, because screen colour and printed colour do not match reliably.

Ordering from Korea: what to send, and what to expect
Because the roll is small and the MOQ is low relative to most sporting goods, hook grip tape works well as a first private label project. Here is the sequence.
1. Send the specification. Width and length (in mm, cm, inch or yards — tell us which units you drive your pricing from), substrate and adhesive preference, edge style, colour direction, branding scope, packaging format, order quantity, destination city and your target launch date.
2. Get a sample first. We provide three sample rolls free of charge, with freight covered by the buyer. Test the tape on a thumb under load before you commit to a print run — that is the only test that matters for this product.
3. Confirm artwork and packaging. If you are printing on the cloth or the core, the number of colours and the artwork resolution determine both cost and timetable. For packaging, the layout and barcode proof come first, then the sample.
4. Plan the production window. Standard orders run 20–25 days; custom orders run 30–40 days from artwork approval. The approval round is the part buyers usually forget to build into a launch date.
5. Documentation and shipping. We prepare export documentation for your destination market, and packing, documentation and dispatch run as a single process rather than across vendors. If you distribute locally in Korea, build your retail labelling and barcode requirement into the packaging artwork from the start.
For a first order, the route most Korean buyers take is straightforward: start with a standard solid-colour run to confirm the specification, add a printed paper core to put your brand on the product at a low entry quantity, and scale into a full printed run with retail packaging once your sell-through is proven. We will tell you honestly which stage suits your volume — including when it is too early for a full print programme.
Documentation
We hold ISO 13485, CE and FDA registration, a product safety test report covering non-toxicity and skin compatibility, and an MSDS — supplied as documents with visible certificate numbers and issuing bodies, so your buyer can check them rather than take them on trust. If you are distributing in Korea, tell us the destination market up front and we will confirm which documents apply before you commit to a production run.
